Article recommendation

Basically look back and look forward.

The first recommendation is Danny's "Eth2 Development Status (January 2021)", which contains many insights. At the same time, there are some articles from the client team, explaining similar content from different angles:

Everything is going really well on the beacon chain. We now have 74,000 active validators, 15,000 queued, meaning 2.85 million ETH staked on the beacon chain, worth (at current prices) $3.8 billion. People who have been staking since the beginning (2 months ago) have now earned about 0.7 ETH (2.2%), although the annualized rate has now dropped to about 10%. Despite this, the number of people participating in staking continues to increase. Etherscan made a breakdown diagram of stakers, including exchanges, staking pools, giant whales and others. Now it seems that this distribution is reasonable.

As people become more familiar with the operation, the frequency of slashing continues to decrease, with only 3 stakers being slashed in the past two weeks. There is currently no indication that the slashing was caused by the system, but by stakers not following warnings and running the same validator on multiple devices.

Leo Bago of the Barcelona Supercomputer Center (BSC) posted some interesting findings on EF research's Discord with data from a beacon chain web crawler they are developing (they use a fork of Rumor to collect the data)

I found this very interesting, Tuya analysis shows that Teku verifier clients are the least used in the network, 12%, which means that the number of verifiers running on Teku nodes is on average twice that of other nodes. This reflects that large staking operators prefer Teku over individual stakers. This is in line with our product goals, but Teku is actually great for personal staking too: it's not just for institutions!

When is sharding implemented? When will the merger be achieved? These are the questions I get asked the most during this time. And I don't have a good answer yet, sorry!

As highlighted in the previous update, we plan to write the specifications for sharding and merging in the first quarter, and then decide on priorities and timelines. Next week, the client team will hold a workshop with the Ethereum Foundation R&D team, and we will discuss the design details in depth. This workshop is by invitation only, but a video will be released after the meeting. You can also watch this workshop to learn about KZG commitments (formerly known as Kate commitments).

The BLS12-381 Blst cryptographic library has been live for a while and is used by most, if not all, client teams. It was officially announced last week.

The Nimbus team is currently holding a dashboard challenge to design a Grafana data dashboard for the Nimbus client. The challenge has cash prizes and will end on February 5th.

Stereum has updated the docker build documentation for the Beacon Chain mainnet.

Coogan Brennan's staking article series published the third article "How to Monitor Your Eth2 Validators and Analyze Your Profit and Loss". This article wrote that he monitored his own node settings and analyzed his profit and loss. Articles like this are well worth reading.

There is also a thread that Jacek occasionally sends out, which will express some views on the progress of the client. Recently published views on Nimbus state migration timing. I always learn a lot from it.

Attestant charts inactive ETH, which in most cases is accumulated by validators staking 32 ETH. This type of ETH is unproductive: cannot be used, does not generate profit. Jim McDonald looks at ways to unleash the productivity of this type of ETH in another article.

I generally don’t promote some staking services in my articles (please click the original text to view how to obtain advertising space). But Rocket Pool and OGs are exceptions. Just before launching the staking pool, they published a series of articles explaining how it works. They have thought about the architecture thoroughly, see their articles for details"Rocket Pool -- Staking Protocol Part1"。

Justin Drake was a guest on the Bankless podcast, expressing optimism about the crypto space with Moon Math. Audio and description click here. This podcast is not technical at all, but rather introduces some innovative ideas that we are building and plan to build in the future. We finally turned "crypto" into "cryptocurrency".

My ConsenSys colleague Joanne Fuller wrote an article on "Formal Methods", which is not strictly Eth2 but worth reading. Because Joanne is one of the members who use these techniques to "formally verify" the Eth2 specification.

Obviously, people change. Back in 2018, I refused to be interviewed out of anger because of Coindesk’s constant malicious reporting on Ethereum at the time. Recently, I not only wrote articles on their platform, but also appeared on a podcast show. I do this largely because of Christine Kim's consistent and accurate reporting over the past few years. Now, she's teaming up with Will Foxley for an Ethereum 2.0 newsletter"Valid Points",very good. They are even running their own Ethereum 2.0 validator nodes. 🎉
