Eth2

➤ Ethstaker Community Call Highlights

Danny Ryan attended the Ethstaker community call and shared the progress of Eth2 in detail. The following is a translation summary of some important issues (Translator's Note: Non-verbatim translation)

Q: What will happen next after the creation of the beacon chain?

A: The beacon chain is firstly used as the basis for a more secure, sustainable, and scalable proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Next, the beacon chain will have more functions. The first is how Eth1 is connected to the new consensus mechanism (hot swapping), and then how to achieve expansion through sharding, and how to unify the shards into the same network under the same consensus mechanism.

Q: How does Eth1 access this new consensus mechanism?

A: Eth1 and Eth2 are not a successive relationship, but more like Eth1 becoming a part of Eth2. So how does Eth1 "live in" Eth2? There is a group that has been working on the merger for the past 6 months, split between Eth1 and Eth2. Under the rollup-centric roadmap, eth1 is like a "first-class citizen", with its state, execution, transactions, and expansion in a sharded data environment. They are closely connected to the beacon chain rather than existing in a disconnected in the slice. The group has set up a local test network, which is run by Teku, one of the eth2 clients, and accesses the user plane through a modified geth, and the two run together. The current progress has not yet reached the product stage, but it has been optimized and documented, hoping to let more people know. I'm not sure when the public version of the testnet will be launched, but it will be launched soon for community participation.

Q: What is the current stage of the merged client testnet?

A: It can be said to be a proof of concept (Proof of concept). There is no very detailed specification yet, but it is close to the stage where you can start writing specifications. A lot of consensus testing is still needed, but the current state seems like a viable solution. And if there is an emergency hard fork, we can also merge Eth1 and Eth2 very quickly, although we don't want to push too fast.

Q: Which one will be implemented first on the beacon chain between merging and sharding?

A: If the data on the shards has no state and execution, they are more like a data layer available to other systems. On the one hand, you cannot put it directly on the beacon chain, because it will be overloaded, so it will not be so close core consensus. Instead it may be supervised by a committee rather than every node at all times, which is a key point of sharding. Although it has no state and execution, it has a lot of consensus content. From a design point of view, it is very important for building systems, and it is also very important for end users. These data can be used for capacity expansion, such as rollup technology, and will be a more familiar environment for existing applications and rollup. For example, you can have a rollup that connects three shards to form an Ethereum environment, and then use it to deploy a large-capacity application. As such, data on shards is not a "second-class citizen", but is not as closely tied to the beacon chain by design as it must be for scaling purposes.

As for the priority of merging and sharding, merging will take longer than we expect and will likely take precedence over sharding. In the first quarter, our job will be to write the specification, do the test, and look at each path before it becomes clear that a certain task needs to be implemented first.

Q: Regarding the two-year lock-up period

A: If the merging occurs before sharding, then the merging will be realized within two years; if the merging occurs after sharding, then the merging will be realized after two years. In addition to many technical considerations, there are community decisions on this time. Opinion. We also prioritize implementing merges if the community wants them to happen faster.

Q: Multi-client testnet

Layer2

➤ Synthetix started Layer2 migration, and SYX staking was launched on Optimistic Ethereum

Last week, DeFi derivatives liquidity protocol Synthetix and Layer2 solution Optimism both launched the first phase of their 2021 roadmap, which is undoubtedly a milestone for them.

cr:Synthetix

Synthetix released this year's roadmap on January 12, the most important upgrade of which is "migration to Optimistic Ethereum, a Layer 2 solution". There are two main benefits of this upgrade: low gas fees and high throughput. Although the exact migration order has not yet been determined, it is certain that Synthetix will give priority to coordinating these two issues: 1) After the migration, a single set of Synths will be maintained, that is, Layer1-sUSD and Layer2-sUSD will not appear at the same time ;2) Reduce the risk of users withdrawing assets from Layer 2 to Layer 1. For a more detailed roadmap, please refer to"Synthetix: Roadmap to 2021"。

cr: Optimism

On January 15, UTC time, Optimistic Ethereum launched its mainnet. According to an article published by the Optimism team, this deployment should be called a "soft launch" (soft launch), as it will go live on the mainnet in an iterative manner. After the release of the Optimistic Ethereum mainnet, Synthetix deployed a new SNX deposit contract on Layer1 as a bridge to allow SNX holders on L1 to migrate to L2. At present, only the Staking function has been launched on Layer 2 of Synthetix, and the transaction between Synths will be launched in the next stage. ➤ Layer 2 cross-chain solution Connext released Vector 0.1.0 on the mainnet

As a solution to Layer 2 interoperability, Connext implements cross-chain routing networks between various Layer 2 solutions, Eth2 shards, and even other Layer 1 blockchains through state channels. After the release of Vector 0.1.0, users can: 1) quickly access/exit any Ethereum Layer2 solution, sharding or other Turing complete chain through it; 2) send tokens between Layer2 solutions, even in Implement the function of calling contracts in subsequent upgrades; 3) Execute normal state channel use cases, such as conditional micropayments.

cr:Connext

After Vector goes live on the mainnet, Connext will focus on cooperation with Layer2 applications, supporting more chains and Layer2 solutions to achieve cross-chain routing networks.

➤ USDT will be launched on ZKRollup solution Hermez Network

According to The Block, the stable currency USDT will cooperate with Hermez, the second-layer expansion solution of Ethereum. In the interview, Jordi BayLina, the technical director of Hermez, revealed that Hermez is scheduled to be released in mid-February, when USDT will be launched on Hermez Netwok.

EIP-1559

➤ 1559 client implementation update

Nethermind tweeted on January 17th that the Nethermind node has been merged in EIP1559, looking forward to further testing with the Besu and Geth teams.

➤ EIP-1559 Twitter Vote

Last week, Bitfly, the parent company of Ethermine, launched a poll "Do you agree with the advancement of EIP-1559?" As of the publication, 9594 people participated in the vote, 61.5% did not support EIP-1559, and 20.8% supported it.

➤ Sushiswap announces roadmap

Sushiswap announced the project roadmap on the blog. In addition to the current version of Deriswap, Sushiswap will also implement Sushi V3: MIRIN. In addition, Sushiswap will be transferred to a new domain name in 2021, no longer limited to AMM, but as an OpenOrg part of the Yearn ecosystem. In terms of integration, the protocol implements cross-chain AMM through Rune/Moonbeam. Polkadot/Moonbeam launches Sushiswap beta on Kusama. In terms of Layer 2, SushiSwap regards Zk-rollups as a preferred option because of the emphasis on composability.

➤ Synthetix announces roadmap

In the public roadmap, the Synthetix protocol will be upgraded to V3, which means that the Synthetix contract will be completely rebuilt. After migrating to L2, synthetic futures with at least 10x leverage are expected to be offered. It is planned to launch optionsDAO, focusing on the binary options market and expanding trading functions. In addition, Synthetix will expand asset categories, including expansion into encrypted assets and commodities, and even stocks. Improve the governance model, improve the election process of the Spartan Council, reduce the authority of the agreement, and continue to decentralize the protocolDAO. Finally, it is mentioned that Synthetix needs to further expand its core contributors, but this process is time-consuming and resource-intensive, so some of them may be avoided through strategic acquisitions.

➤ Birth of Iron Bank

CREAM Finance blogged about Iron Bank, an inter-protocol lending platform. The core of Iron Bank is zero-mortgage lending, and the user-oriented is mainly an on-chain protocol. Inter-protocol lending will enable the credit system, and whitelisted protocols will get a credit limit, which can lend assets directly from CREAM v2. This way the protocol does not need to waste liquidity in exchange for needed funds.

➤ Curve launches cross-asset trading function

Cross-asset trading is Curve's new way of trading using Synthetix as a bridge. Curve can trade similar assets with extremely low slippage and low fees, while Synthetix enables sToken-sToken zero-slippage trading. As a result, users can exchange ERC20 assets for ERC20 assets through the cross-asset transaction function. But because of the huge gas fee and the 6-minute waiting time for transactions, this function is suitable for large transactions.
