🎄 Quick Facts
➤ We have opened a preliminary EIP 1559 pull request (PR) for the geth codebase. 🔥
➤ Our large state testnet is running slowly but steadily 🐢
➤ The conclusion of the previous transaction pool management is very optimistic🤞🏻
➤ Nethermind is about to release a new R&D notebook to analyze miner collusion👀
➤ Lots of papers and conferences on 1559 📑📺
⛓Client update
First, the Vulcanize team opened a PR for EIP-1559 against the go-ethereum library. While this isn't the final PR (1559's spec isn't complete), it will provide enough background information for the Geth team to do an initial review.
Regarding Besu, this large state testnet generator keeps us busy. Although it is quite easy to load 100 million accounts on the testnet, it is more difficult to add 100 million smart contract storage items. We have changed our approach to use smaller blocks and contracts. Progress is steady, albeit slow.
We're going to have the full network ready in the next week or so. We'll add other clients to it when we're done. When everyone is synchronized, we will launch a "transaction bombing" plan, that is, each client will conduct transaction bombing on the network. If the testnet can survive the bombardment, then it means that EIP-1559 will remain stable despite severe network congestion.
Finally, OpenEthereum is still hiring full time to advance the 1559 implementation.
🤖 R&D update
In terms of transaction pool management, Ansgar mentioned at the recent implementers meeting that he was optimistic about his initial conclusions. After researching the geth codebase, he found that the miner transaction pool has recently reordered almost every block, which is one of the "worst-case scenarios" facing 1559. In other words, 1559 shouldn't make the current state of the network worse, even though we didn't come up with better optimizations.
For nodes without mining, he believes that we should come up with some transaction pool eviction methods, which may not be perfect, but can work well under different BASE FEE. He hopes to properly publish some articles in the next few weeks to illustrate the details.
Nethermind also shared an update on their team's R&D in that implementers meeting. They are currently simulating some scenarios (where some miners may conspire to increase or decrease BASE FEE), focusing on situations where miners may hedge transaction fee risk.
They look forward to publishing their results soon. In the implementers meeting, they also mentioned that most attack scenarios involve miners controlling a majority of the hash rate, and when BASE FEE changes drastically (~10x), these attacks become very expensive. We very much look forward to the full report!
📑📺 Papers and conferences
A new paper by Barnabé Monnot et al. analyzes 1559 from a cybernetic perspective.
Juan Benet delivered a talk on "Filecoin's 1559 Implementation" at the Storage Market Summit.
I gave an overview of 1559 and answered questions from the "Exploring the EIP Series" on Ethereum Cat Herder. You can watch this discussion back at ETHConKorea: https://ethcon.kr/.
✅ Next step
new Year plan:
➤ Introduce Besu, Nethermind, and Geth to our large state testnet and launch a "transaction bombing" program. ;
➤ Add EIP-2718 support on top of EIP-1559 after the Berlin hard fork is complete;
➤ Upgrade the transaction pool to improve its efficiency;
➤ Analyze and improve the update rules of BASE FEE;
