The total value of tokens locked in DeFi hit a new high on Nov. 24, but surging crypto prices masked a surprising new trend, the amount of ETH locked in DeFi protocols is actually declining.
Since November 20, the total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols has grown to over $14 billion, reaching an all-time high of $14.39 billion on November 21. Rising prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum have been a source of continued growth in TVL. Since the beginning of November, BTC prices are up 34%, and ETH is up 54%.
However, according to DeBank data, in the same time frame, more than 2 million ETH left the DeFi ecosystem, while the number of Bitcoin anchor coins has remained relatively stable.
ETH locked in DeFi reached a high of 9.25 million on October 20th. Since then, although the TVL has risen by 23%, this is actually due to the increase in the price of ETH, and the actual lock-up volume of ETH has fallen by more than 25%. Meanwhile, the number of BTC locked remained largely unchanged, rising to 168,500 from 164,500 on October 20.
