DAppNode is a free open source software package that sets up a computer to run an Ethereum full node, an IPFS node and a VPN, all managed from a simple web interface, Avado is a pre-configured hardware box that runs DAppNode.

The popular understanding is that DappNode is a one-click installation software for running nodes, and Avado is a node hardware device that can be used after plugging in the power supply. This hard and soft is the most convenient personal ETH2.0 verification node solution at this stage

Running an ETH validator can be a pain. Taking hardware from an old computer or buying a new one to run a Linux terminal and make sure they are secure enough... It's not easy to participate in ETH staking mining at the moment. Most people just want a "plug and play" solution to earn passive income denominated in ETH. DAppNode and Avado are two solid options that offer decent hardware and a decent user interface, which is a basic requirement for a non-technical person.

Run the ETH validator

With the launch of the beacon beacon chain deposit contract, Ethereum began the journey of converting its consensus mechanism from proof-of-work POW to proof-of-stake proof-of-stake. This process is more democratized and brings a level of decentralization and network resilience not possible with POW.

While POS lowers the barrier to entry for POW mining, the technical expertise required to securely stake ETH at home (and be able to sleep at night) may deter many potential participants. This is especially true during the earliest start-up phases before true plug-and-play solutions emerge.

DappNode

The good news is there are some less technical options among us. You don't need to be an expert Linux sysadmin to start using it, and the tools available are only going to get better from here on out.

In the previous article, I wrote how to easily run a node at home through DappNode and Avado's software package. They provide everything you need to run a Linux server that supports the decentralized web and allow simple management from a web interface on your phone or laptop. I run servers from both systems and they are great for anyone who wants to run node but is afraid of the command line interface.

Why so much trouble?

So why are there thousands of people running nodes at home? Some want to connect MetaMask and other tools directly to their own nodes to provide an extra layer of security and to avoid relying on the massive endpoints that many applications use by default. For others, it's an expectation to contribute to the health of the network, a platform that enables financial sovereignty without intermediaries.

DappNode is a free open-source software package that includes everything you need to set up your computer as a server running an Ethereum node, IPFS node, and more. It includes everything from the operating system itself: Debian 10. You can download packages and install them yourself, or you can buy pre-configured systems directly from the team. Once set up, all of this can be managed from a simple web page, accessible from anywhere via a VPN connection.

DappNodes use OpenVPN. During the installation process, you will get a link to download the OpenVPN configuration file, download and import. IPFS and ENS addresses will be resolvable in all browsers without additional plugins.

Avado

The DAppNode team has put a lot of effort into making sure that running your own eth2 validator at home is just as convenient. Their UI can help with the setup process: the user will be guided through the steps on the eth2 Launch Pad (including key generation), and then all operations can be monitored on the page.

Running a validator for many public eth2 testnets using DAppNode is very simple and I recommend anyone staking mining at home to deposit on the testnet first. When it comes to mainnet support, DAppNode will allow users to choose between Prysm and Lighthouse clients, switch between the two if desired, and eventually launch their respective client pages from within the web UI.

The DAppNode team wants to make supporting network health as easy as possible through client diversity, and plans to implement Nimbus and Teku clients as options as well. It will also support the monitoring tool Grafana, which provides easier visual analysis of the validator's activity and can also send alerts when there are problems with the system.

Avado was released as a fork of DAppNode in 2018, and it has a compromise design to make the operation of the node easier.

While DAppNode originally relied on a synced Ethereum node to verify that the IPFS package was the correct version, Avado has chosen to maintain its own list of available applications to make it faster and easier for users to choose any network. Avado has chosen to compete on convenience and is committed to supporting staking on more chains.

Although Avado offers many of the same packages as DAppNode, over time they have developed different features, such as RYO Cloud, which allows users to choose to share the node as an endpoint to other users.

This provides an alternative to Infura and other popular services, where anyone can choose to connect to RYO Cloud as an endpoint on Ethereum, with requests being balanced across all volunteer servers.

How to get started if you are interested?

in conclusion

There are two ways to set up your own system and load the DAppNode, or buy a pre-configured system that is ready to use once plugged into it. If the goal is convenience, it is recommended to choose to pay more and choose the latter.
