Quick FactsTim Beiko

Quick Facts

  • Fundraising is complete. Ethereum Foundation grants ConsenSys and 1559 multi-signature grants.

  • Forked testnet. We are exploring whether it is possible to fork a 1559 testnet with a large state from the mainnet.

  • various tools. The Besu team has been working hard to build a series of tools to make it easier for users to interact with the 1559 testnet.

  • Escalator Tip simulation. Barnabé's team published a new notebook analyzing the impact of using EIP-2593-style fees as part of the 1559 tip.

  • Massive content. We have a new article on 1559UX, as well as a ton of new related EIPs and analysis of 1559 implementations on another network.

Funding update

Ethereum Foundation to ConsenSys and1559 multi-signatureFunding is provided for the cost of tooling, project management, communication, client implementation, and bug bounties to support EIP-1559!

We are still in the process of finalizing the funding, but it will be on-chain soon. These funds are enough to finalize the EIP-1559 specification, and to conduct a series of tests, we can lead its development through AllCoreDev (Core Developer Conference).

The results of the community’s promotion of this matter are worth mentioning. They set multiple records for the first round of Gitcoin grant donations, have been publicly supporting 1559, and have collaborated and provided financial support behind the scenes. Thanks to each of you - now back to work!

Testnet update

Over the past few months, we have been running the 1559 testnet in a small circle to ensure that there is consensus among the implementation teams. It looks like we're 99% there now. Nethermind has joined Besu as a validator in the network (although there is still a bug not fixed), and the Geth implementation of Vulcanize is now in consensus with other Geth and Besu nodes, Nethermind will follow soon .

Now the testnet has apublic block explorer, and a display of participating nodesEthereum data page. Meanwhile, the Besu team has tested its 1559 Proof-of-Work (PoW) implementation on the Besu private testnet and found no issues.

In this week's implementers meeting, we reached a consensus to try to fork a multi-client PoW testnet on the mainnet. This decision is good because it allows us to test the implementation in the context of the large state of the mainnet and allow everyone with a mainnet account to interact with the network.it just might be more complicated than it looks。

tool update

hereheretry it. You can submit legacy and adapted 1559 transactions to the testnet on the main page.

One cool thing to mention: on the testnet, the legacy transaction can be interpreted as a transaction adapted to 1559, so it needs to pay a gas price higher than the base fee to become a valid transaction, and the base fee will be in during execution. The gas fee is destroyed.

Another useful feature of the toolbox is the base fee API, through which you can ask a specific block in the testnet for a base fee.

In addition to the transaction sender tool and the base fee API, the toolbox is also linked to the EIP itself, these updates, the network block explorer, the Ethereum data page, and the guidelines and genesis files for nodes to join the testnet. For a full demo of the tool, readers are referred to the latest implementers meeting proceedings, from 12:00。

mock update

Barnabé and his team published anew notebook, simulating the combination of EIP-1559 and "escalator tip" (gradient tip). The "escalator tip" was proposed by Dan FinlayEIP-2593Inspiration, add a second dimension—time—to users when they propose tips.

In other words, it allows users to specify not only the minimum and maximum tip they want to pay miners, but also how far beyond that they want to increase it.

For example, some users are eager to make a transaction, and they are willing to pay a tip of 10 gwei[0] as long as their transaction can be packaged in the next two blocks; while some users don’t mind waiting, and only need the last transaction to be packaged By block, they would like to be able to specify a price range, such as 1-20 gwei, but at a different time span, such as the next 100 blocks.

This notebook compares the strategies of these two types of users: hurrying users who "set the escalator gradient of their fees for every unit of time they wait, and whenever their current equity becomes negative, They'll just stop bidding." For fixed duration users, they set the length of the escalator for the same net value, and set the slope as large as possible within the length. "

Barnabé gave a brief introduction to this notebook in this week's implementers meeting,Start at 5:11。

Content and other updates

  1. The Besu team has started writing EIPs for updating various JSON-RPC calls that are affected by EIP-1559. So far, we have written 4 EIPs, and there are probably 5 more to be written. The full list has been updated toMainnet Readiness Checklist(mainnet preparation checklist).

  2. Miach Zoltu has written an articleParaphrase essay on the UX importance of EIP-1559. These can sometimes be too abstract to quantify, so Micah's article explains a specific scenario step-by-step and highlights how 1559 made it better.

  3. Hasu wrote a newAnalysis of EIP-1559, this article is about the implementation of the Near protocol.

  4. I did a talk on ETHOnline a few weeks ago aboutFollow-up。

Follow-up

I've covered these throughout this update, but for clarity, here's what we're going to do next:

  • Go live and run a proof-of-work testnet with "large state", either by forking from mainnet or by re-building.

  • this documentthis documentDesigned to document the strategy adopted by the implementation team.

  • Continue to improve the tooling around 1559, making it easier for non-implementers to try it out and provide feedback.

  • Continue a number of less urgent tasks, such as writing JSON RPC EIP, adding reference tests, etc.

I hope that in the next update, we have a way for people who want to experiment with 1559 to receive the ETH of the testnet in the live network, imitating the environment of the mainnet
