Note: EIP-1559 is one of the most anticipated Ethereum improvement proposals, which will change the fee market of Ethereum. According to an article written by ConsenSys Senior Product Manager Tim Beiko, the biggest obstacle to landing EIP-1559 is still DoS risk problem, and there are already some solutions, the following is the latest progress of EIP-1559 summarized by Tim Beiko:
We discussed EIP-1559 again at the AllCoreDevs conference, DoS risk is still the main obstacle in the eventual deployment of it, and there are no new objections for the time being;
The Besu and Nethermind clients are synchronizing to the 1559 test network, we are debugging the Geth consensus problem, and a lot of research and development work is in progress;
The mainnet readiness checklist is online;
Ethereum Cat Herders released a community survey report on the EIP-1559 proposal!
Implement updates
A lot has happened since we posted a progress update on EIP-1559 three weeks ago!EIP-2929First, we discussed EIP-1559 at the AllCoreDevs#97 meeting, we not only shared the update progress, but also asked the relevant client teams about the main obstacles it faced, and since the discussion at ACD#77, these factors has changed.The good news is that they don't have any new major objections to EIP-1559! During this period, some minor issues were raised, such as the goal of EIP is a bit unclear (is it about improving user experience? Burning fees? Or increasing throughput?), but no new objections have emerged. Furthermore, the Nethermind team was surprised by the simplification of the specification.The bad news is that the risk of denial of service (DoS) on Ethereum is still the main problem we need to solve before deploying Eip-1559. Fortunately, something like
(now part of the next interim testnet YOLOv2) as well as
Geth's snapshot method
Second, we had another meeting of Eip-1559 implementers. We talked a lot: Besu and Nethermind are both syncing on the 1559 Clique testnet, Vulcanize is still trying to debug a consensus issue on Geth, multiple mock scenarios are in development, and we're about to start writing changes to the JSON-RPC spec to support Eip-1559 style transactions.
R & D update
Third, I created a mainnet readiness checklist to document the conditions for EIP-1559 to be ready. I'll keep you updated as issues arise and are resolved. Considering that predicting the date of Ethereum is almost unrealistic, this should help the community understand the progress of EIP-1559
Our biggest win so far is getting PR#2924 into the spec, which greatly simplifies EIP-1559! Now, we can treat legacy transactions as EIP-1559-style transactions, setting the gas price as the sum of the base fee and tip. This means that old versions of transactions don't have to be deprecated (but pay slightly more in tipping), which means we don't have to have a transition period, and we don't need to maintain two parallel transaction pools!
R & D update
At the implementers meeting, Barnabé Monnot detailed his team's simulation work. The entire recording is worth listening to, and in short, his team is simulating a variety of potential scenarios, from quantifying the UX benefits of EIP-1559, to analyzing various user behaviors.
Monnot has published two simulation results reports, and we can expect more to be shared in the coming weeks. Barnabé also gave a more detailed overview of his work this week as part of the Taipei Ethereum conference.
Another point worth pointing out is that Vitalik himself also mentioned EIP-1559 in his rollup-centric Ethereum roadmap. By making it easier to incorporate Ethereum into the next block, EIP-1559 is beneficial for rollups that rely on on-chain transaction confirmations.
community update
As mentioned in the last update, Ethereum Cat Herders have reached out to various projects in the community for feedback on EIP-1559. Now, Cat Wrangler has processed the first responses and has released an initial community outreach report. The report contains both a summary of the core findings and an FAO answer to frequently asked questions.For the next edition of the report, Ethereum Cat Herders will be happy to speak to more wallets and exchanges.
