Since 2018, the number of web developers building applications on Ethereum has grown year-over-year. According to npm.stat, which shows the number of downloads of JavaScript code libraries, more Ethereum-specific code packages were downloaded in 2020 than in 2018 and 2019 combined.

Ethereum builders (Buidler) keep building

The two most commonly used JavaScript libraries in Ethereum are Ethers.js and Web3.js. As the chart shows, usage of both codebases has expanded rapidly over the past two years, according to ChainShot.com.
Combining data from both codebases shows a 400% increase in downloads of Ethereum-specific code since 2018. The sharp uptick in the number of developers is all the more impressive because Ethereum has done little during this time other than a drop in price.

After the 2017-2018 bull run, both ETH’s token price and Ethereum Google search interest dropped significantly. Current Google Trends data shows that searches for Ethereum are down 87% from its all-time high.
However, it seems that the developers are not disturbed. The chart below shows weekly downloads of Ethers.js. In January 2018, there were only 918 downloads per week. By summer 2020, that number had skyrocketed to 196,423, an increase of 21,296%.

Ethereum JavaScript is gaining popularity
Overall, there were 9.5 million downloads of the Ethereum codebase in 2020. For reference, the most commonly used JavaScript code library on the Internet is Lodash. In 2020, Lodash was downloaded 832 million times, which means that the number of downloads of Ethereum is only equivalent to a little over 11% of the most used JavaScript library on the Internet.
