Testnet failure

The situation on the Medalla beacon chain testnet has been unstable. Last week I summarized an articleinitial event recap, if some readers don't know what happened, they can read it first. The Prysm team has also released theirdetailed reportimage description

UTC time 2020-08-14

We can see that initially over a period of thirty minutes or so, the number of validators dropped significantly. The Prysm nodes all suddenly disappeared because their time was set four hours into the future. The red horizontal line in the graph represents a participation rate of 66.7%, which is the minimum required for the network to be able to finalize, and the participation rate has dropped to its lowest point at that time.

Things started to improve gradually as nodes transferred their keys to other clients. Two hours after the incident, things seemed more optimistic as Cloudfare resolved the clock issue and the Prysm validators who hadn't been updated came back to the network. according toDescription of Prysmatic Labs, a serious vulnerability appeared in the updated version of the client that was originally intended to fix the problem, which prevented validators who had updated the client from going back online, which complicated the problem.

Four hours after the accident, chaos began to ensue, and participation rates dropped again. Because all clients need to process the "proofs from the future" previously made by Prysm verifiers, these proofs are now valid. As nodes try to process these proofs and blocks, the network begins to split. The Teku and Lighthouse clients gradually bloated memory, which caused performance and crash problems, and the updated Prysm client couldn't go online, and it was a total chaos.

But it was one of the best testing experiences I could have imagined! If there is a meeting about client testing, and everyone gets together to discuss how to break the network in an extreme way, I don't think we may come up with such an exciting way. The "time travel" event also inspired our thinking, especially after a large number of validators were slashed.

As a result, we tried many previously unexplored code paths and made many general improvements. Everything is better than before. We really gained a lot of valuable experience from this incident.

What is the status quo?

Earlier this week, the client team was busy hardening the client for unexpected extreme conditions. We slowly climbed very hard to the 66.7% participation rate required by the network, and the network finally returned to normal. This time point is 18:30 UTC time on August 19, five days have passed since the accident. During those five days, there were always clients that held up, and the network never really stopped functioning. This proves that the beacon chain is very robust and the beacon chain is able to recover.

Here's some interesting news: What you can get while learning Eth2POAPaward! Here is the relevant information, you can enterEthstaker DiscordherehereIt's an announcement. The general meaning is to read ten Eth2 articles and answer related questions in ten weeks. If you get good grades, you can get POAP rewards. I really hope that the developers of Eth2 are not left out

Client Tutorials: Somer Esat continues his series of tutorials, explaining in depthHow to setup Teku client in Medalla testnet using Ubuntu systemvideo tutorialvideo tutorial。

In addition to this, Super Phi also recorded a how-to with CaymanSetting up the video of the Lodestar client. Coinmonks also wrote an article on setting upTutorial for the Lighthouse client。

As for Teku, I also made aTeku Troubleshooting Guide. Feedback is welcome.

For readers who like to read quickly, I recommend reading Simon de la Rouviere onTweet from the Eth2 overview. Narkasa Exchange also published a nice introduction:research work

research work

Regarding the mechanism efficiency of how the Eth2 beacon chain reaches consensus on the state of Eth1, I didan analysis, which may not fall under the category of "research". Too long to read: There is still room for improvement, and I have a suggestion for that.

The TX/RX team at ConsenSys has made a simulator to run Eth1 client in Eth2 sharding environment (i.e. phase 1.5), now you can tooParticipate in running. The Eth2 environment is based on the Teku client, and the Eth1 environment is based on Catalyst (Guillaume Ballet's Geth fork). Although it seems that a long time has passed, the EDCON conference video is worth reviewing, and there are many dry things about Eth2:

  1. Vitalik: Opportunities and challenges from Eth1 to Eth2

  2. Danny Ryan: Eth1/Eth2 merge simulator (meow star people make trouble)

  3. Hsiao-Wei: Phase 1 Fragmented Data Chain

  4. Aditya: Weak subjectivity

  5. Afri: The final road to Eth2

We only had a brief review of the Medalla event in this meeting, because we kept in touch during the process and the time was a bit tight.

Is there anything like discussing Eth2 while tasting wine? Quantstamp and Cred team up for a remote wine tasting and roundtable: "Wine Not Talk About Ethereum 2.0?"

herehere, they will send you the wine.

I will also attend this roundtable with many Eth2 friends who I admire very much. But it was 2:00 am on my side, so I might have been drunk before the meeting started. Should be interesting!
