A few months ago, we successfully launched the Topaz testnet, which is the first public testnet using ETH 2.0 mainnet-level parameters. Topaz worked well and also live-streamed the successful launch event on Youtube. Now, we are taking the testnet to the next level to be compliant with v0.12.1, the latest official specification for ETH 2.0. This specification should be the last important specification update before the launch of the phase 0 mainnet.

Topaz Testnet Summary

- Topaz Testnet Progress -
The previous testnet Topaz has already supported users to pledge 32 ETH to become a validator on the Goerli ETH1.0 testnet. As of press time, there are 39,823 active verifiers on the Topaz test network, and the verifiers from the Prysmatic Labs team account for less than 35%. The testnet nodes are highly decentralized, with some nodes connecting as many as 700 nodes. Despite its size, the Topaz testnet is not multi-client compatible, as there is a bug in our consensus rules, other clients cannot successfully sync the Topaz blockchain.
What are the new features of the Onyx testnet?
As the next iteration of Topaz, Onyx testnet includes some important improvements, improved p2p message processing, and is consistent with the latest specification of ETH 2.0. The goal of the v0.12.1 official specification is to become the main online version, and unless there are serious loopholes, it will not be changed. Onyx is fully following this version of the specification. Some of the advanced improvements included in the Onyx testnet are listed below:
Better handle the secondary network formed around the attestation message on the basis of P2P network, and improve the robustness of ETH 2.0 network implementation
Significantly improved testing for vulnerable consensus code such as reward/punishment calculations
Improve ETH 1.0 data processing
Ensure that when the inactivity leak mechanism is triggered, the validator with better performance will not be deducted from the balance, which will greatly improve the user experience
The Onyx testnet is currently accepting genesis stakes. The Prysmatic Labs team will soon retire Topaz validators and start depositing new Genesis Bonds. Onyx is a new blockchain that requires new validators, so users who want to become validators must go through the staking process again.
If you want to become a genesis validator, please send the deposit before 1:00 am on June 11, 2020 (Thursday), Beijing time. Prysmatic Labs will be sending a substantial deposit to the Onyx testnet at this point in time. Please visit the testnet bootstrap site and join us on Discord!
Our goal is to make the Onyx testnet compatible with multiple clients. Additional work has been put into preventing consensus bugs in newer versions. **Once other client teams are fully updated to v0.12.1, there will be a large number of nodes from different ETH 2.0 teams in the Onyx testnet.

Note that Onyx is a testnet, just test tokens with ETH. Never send real ETH to a margin contract.
