We are excited to announce that we will soon be launching a brand new and improved Eth2 Phase 0 testnet: Onyx Testnet. The goal of this testnet is to comply with the official Eth2.0 specification version v0.12.1.
Prysmatic Labs' 5 Milestones on the Way to Eth2 Mainnet
Topaz Testnet Review
image description
The previous testnet Topaz allowed validators to stake 32 ETH to participate in the Goerli testnet. As of this writing, the Topaz testnet has 39,823 active validators, and less than 35% of this testnet is controlled by the Prysmatic Labs team. The Topaz testnet already maintains a large number of decentralized nodes. Despite these achievements of the Topaz testnet, Topaz is not multi-client compatible because there is a consensus bug that prevents other clients from successfully syncing with the chain.

What's new in the Onyx testnet?
The Onyx testnet is the next iteration of the Topaz testnet. Onyx is a new and improved testnet that includes some significant performance improvements, improved p2p message handling, and alignment with the latest Eth2.0 specification version v0.12.1. Unless there are major bugs, the v0.12.1 specification version will be the official version targeted for mainnet release, and Onyx is fully updated to this specification. Below are some of the high-level improvements that the Onyx testnet will include:
Better handling of validator attestations to improve the robustness of the eth2 network implementation;
Greatly improved testing of important consensus code such as reward/penalty calculations;
Improved handling of eth1 data;
Ensuring that during an inactivity leak (secondary leak penalty) in the network, the balance of the best performing validators will not be affected will greatly improve the user experience.
The Onyx testnet is currently accepting Genesis collateral deposits. Soon, Prysmatic Labs will shut down our Topaz validators and start sending fresh genesis deposits. Onyx will be a brand new blockchain with new validators, which means you will need to go through the token staking process all over again.
If you would like to become a genesis validator for the Onyx testnet, please send your collateral deposit by Wednesday, June 10, 2020 UTC, when the Prysmatic team will begin sending large deposits to launch the Onyx testnet. Go to this page[3] to stake and join us in the Discord[4] chat room!
