Goals of the Alderaan release

Alderaan is the second major release of the Raiden Network on Ethereum. The goal of this release is to build a secure, stable, and feature-complete version of the Raiden Network, and support other projects to start building on Raiden and integrating Raiden into their dapps.

  • Anyone interested in fast, cheap and scalable payments on Ethereum is welcome to try the Alderaan release. We also welcome feedback and feature requests from app projects that want to integrate Raiden as the underlying payment technology, and we also welcome cooperation with projects that want to add Raiden as payment.

  • Features included in the Alderaan release

  • The new features included in Alderaan are listed below.

  • Intermediary fees - allow intermediary nodes to earn fees and maintain network balance

  • Path discovery service - nodes do not need to know the complete network topology

Partial withdrawal - can be withdrawn without closing the channel

Raiden Wizard - Setting up a Raiden node made easy and fast

Numerous fixes and improvements to make the protocol and transfer layer stronger and faster

Understanding Alderaan Versions

Raiden Wizard has a fast and easy login experience. See the next section for detailed instructions on how to set up a Raiden node quickly and easily. Raiden can also obtain the installation package with one click on the DAppNode of the DAppStore.

  • View Raiden's smart contract on EtherScan:

  • Start building and operating with Thunderbolt

  • To get started with Thunderbolt quickly, we created the Thunderbolt Wizard. The Raiden Wizard helps users set up and fund a Raiden node with just a few clicks.

  • Before starting, you need:

An infura ID.

An ether account with at least 0.13 ETH in Metamask.

Then visit the Thunder Wizard releases page to download the latest version. Extract the downloaded archive and run the executable called "raiden_wizard".

Security Measures for Alderaan Versions

Since Alderaan is a beta version of the Raiden Network on Ethereum, we have taken strong risk mitigation measures to limit the potential damage from bugs or software misuse, ensuring a responsible experimentation environment for this nascent technology. Note that Alderaan releases have not been audited by an external third party for security.

Deposit Limits - $1,000 token value per channel per node and $1 million token value per token network, with a deprecation switch in place to prevent any potential loss of funds. A deprecation switch prevents opening new channels and making deposits. However, even if the deprecation is triggered, users will still be able to transfer funds, close and settle channels. Additionally, this version of Raiden is limited to two token networks, (wrapped Ether) and DAI.

Benefits of Thunderbolt Services

PFS is set to "--route-mode" by default. This means that whenever a node wants to transfer money to other nodes in the network, it will ask PFS to provide a route through the network to reach the target node. To this end, PFS charges a small fee as an IOU by requesting a node's UserDeposit (user deposit).

Channel monitoring is turned off by default in "--enable-monitoring (open monitoring)". If enabled, the Raiden node with problems can go offline without worrying about the other party closing the channel, so it cannot provide the correct latest balance proof. The monitoring service also charges a small IOU via UserDeposit after successfully closing a channel on behalf of a node.

The fee for Raiden service (monitoring and path discovery service) is paid with RDN.

Functional limitations of the Alderaan version

The functional limitations of the current version are:

Deprecated Red Eyes

Users of Red Eyes are strongly advised to check if they still have any open channels. If there are still channels open, please be sure to close and resolve them.

This is because Red Eyes will no longer be supported after Alderaan is released, and brainbot labs may deprecate these contracts entirely at some point after Alderaan is released.

  • IMPORTANT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

  • Always remember: while Alderaan is more mature and stable than Red Eyes, it's still only a beta. Please be sure to follow the safety tips and system requirements below to avoid increased risk of loss of funds. But even if you follow these guidelines, you can lose coins.

  • Synchronization and stable operation of Ethereum nodes: ensure the stable work of the first layer. This means you must have an ethereum node, be it geth or parity, that is in sync and working stably. If there are any problems or bugs in the client, then Raiden will not work stably.

  • Ethereum client always online: Make sure your Ethereum client is always online during Raiden node operations. As mentioned above, if you have channel monitoring enabled, you can go offline safely, but to use a Raiden node to transfer funds, you must have an Ethereum node that is online and synced. We recommend running node in a monitor, which will restart it if it crashes for some reason.

  • Cannot change Ethereum client: It is considered dangerous to exchange in Ethereum client when the transaction is not mined. It is recommended to avoid switching Ethereum clients while a Raiden node is running.

  • Raiden online operation: currently all nodes participating in the transfer need to be online in order to perform the transfer. Therefore, please make sure that your Raiden node is always running and online, and the network connection is stable. As mentioned above, if a node has monitoring enabled, it can be shut down safely, but while offline, it will not be able to receive, coordinate, or send transfers.

  • Dedicated Raiden account: Raiden requires you to have a dedicated ether account assigned to Raiden. Creating a manual transaction with an Ethereum account may have undefined behavior when the Raiden client is running. However, if Raiden is not running, the account can be safely used for manual trading.

  • Sufficient ETH in Raiden account: If your Raiden account does not have enough ETH, Raiden will warn you, maintain your currently open channels, and allow them to enter the entire cycle. However, it is your job to top up your account with ETH and take the caveats seriously.

  • The intermediary transfer amount should not be too small: Currently, the Thunderbolt client cancels transactions where the handling fee exceeds 20% of the transfer amount, which means that the transfer amount must be large enough, so the handling fee will not exceed 20% of the transfer amount. When using an intermediary, the minimum amount of the token network is DAI: minimum 0.00001 DAI, WETH: minimum 0.0000001 WETH.

Persistence for local databases: Your local state database is located in ~/.raiden. These data cannot be deleted by the user or tampered with in any way. Frequent backups are recommended. Deleting this directory will result in loss of funds.

Never expose the Raiden REST API: In Raiden operations, clients need to be able to sign transactions at any point in time. Therefore, the Raiden Rest API should never be exposed to the public. Be very careful when changing --rpc and --rpccorsdomain values.

  • Be patient: don't fiddle with the buttons in the webUI, and don't close the client while on-chain transactions are running and haven't been confirmed yet.

  • known issues

  • Below is a non-exhaustive list of known issues that you need to be aware of when using the current version of the software. Most of these problems are not unique to Raiden, but common to all Ethereum L2 solutions.
