A proposal to create a dedicated Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) has sparked debate within the Ethereum community. The purpose of this DAO is to provide refunds to users who mistakenly send funds to the wrong address, provided the address contains fewer than three wrong characters.

A user asked for help in the r/Ethfinance community on Reddit. He said that he lost 40 ETH because he mistyped one character of the wallet address, so the community gave the above proposal.

40 ETH was sent to the wrong address

On May 6, netizen daso14 mentioned that when transferring 40 ETH, a character corresponding to the receiving address was mistakenly copied to his computer clipboard.

In response, Reddit user conn6614 suggested creating a mechanism to rescue Ethereum that was accidentally sent to the wrong address.

On May 16, netizen SrPeixinho proposed a solution aimed at solving the problem of irreparable loss of funds due to incorrectly entered characters. The proposal suggested creating a DAO, "for sending Ethereum to the wrong address ( 1-2 wrong characters) user refund".

The following is the full text of the proposal:

"As early Ethereum supporters, it was our responsibility to find flaws in the technology and work on solutions. I feel that sometimes the community is so eager to solve the hardest math problems that it ignores the simplest things around the technology's practicality. , the most fundamental human problems. One of them is the way we handle wrong addresses.

It's not a minor inconvenience, it's a major usability flaw that can change lives. Twitter user EthLost sent 40 ETH to an address with only one character wrong, the money was so important to him that he claimed he could barely sleep. Of course, it's his fault that he invested money he didn't want to lose on an experimental technology, but do we want Ethereum to be labeled an experiment forever? If we never cared about our users, those real people, and how they are affected, we couldn't just sit around and wait for people to start using Ethereum. I would like to urge developers to stop using lowercase addresses, however, since we cannot rely on this, I would also like to make a moderate suggestion.

My suggestion is that we create a DAO that refunds the user who accidentally sent ether to the wrong address (1-2 digit error). That DAO is just a simple smart contract deployed on the mainnet. Then we will voluntarily deposit a small portion of our holdings there, and I really hope there are enough good-hearted people around us depositing sufficient funds there. Then, if any Ethereum user (including yourself) sends the wrong funds due to 1-2 digit address errors, he/she can withdraw the contract balance by calling refund_me (wrong_address). This contract will simply check if wrong_address (wrong address) is different from address. balance) to address.sender.

While this isn't the final solution, it's something that can be done for now. Again, changing the protocol at this point is next to impossible, however, at a small cost to everyone, we can help EthLost and others who are also negatively impacted by this issue. how do you feel? Do you agree that this issue must be addressed? Would you like to donate funds to this type of DAO? Welcome to share your views. "
