Researchers working on ethereum 2.0 phases 1 and 2 say they will demonstrate how to implement ethereum 2.0's sharding implementation at the upcoming Devcon ethereum developer conference.

ConsenSys Quilt team programmer Will Villanueva, who is working on the later stages of Ethereum 2.0, said:

It is reported that some staff involved in the second phase of Ethereum 2.0 will participate in this Devcon conference, including the Quilt team of ConsenSys and the Ewasm team of the Ethereum Foundation. ConsenSys says the conference will be a great opportunity to effectively synchronize each other's work (no pun intended).

From Phase 0 to Phase 2, most of the upgrade work can be done in parallel

Ewasm will be a major upgrade to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which has played an important role in many aspects such as the execution of smart contracts by end users. Once Ewasm is launched, the two-year upgrade work will end after the upgrade of all "shards" is completed.

Before that, Ethereum 2.0 still needs to be implemented in several stages. The new proof-of-stake (PoS) beacon chain (perhaps simply referred to as the base layer or foundation), may now launch a testnet supporting multiple clients in a matter of weeks. Phase 1 will then be simply distributed and linked to the eth1 proof-of-work (PoW) chain in late 2020.

Phase 2 of Ewasm will be the finale, when all completed upgrades will go live for everyone to see and use, with all the great features and greater network capacity. But for now, people's attention is basically focused on Phase 0 (the beacon chain), but in fact the work on the beacon chain has been completed, and it just needs further refinement and a lot of testing before it can be launched.

Just after the launch of the first independent client testnet in the first phase, some people have begun to focus on other phases since May. Will Villanueva said at the time:

“Contrary to popular belief in the industry, Phase 0 to Phase 2 of the Ethereum 2.0 upgrade does not actually need to be done sequentially, and most of the work in each phase can be done in parallel.”

That's presumably what Will Villanueva has been working on for the last few months, and their work on Phase 1 and Phase 2 will show up in the next few days -- but it's still very early days, as far as we know, The work done so far is a standalone shard that is complete and will run on Lighthouse, an Ethereum 2.0 client similar to eth1's Geth client. This shard will eventually be cloned into 1024 shards, which are then coordinated and connected through beacons and cross-shard transactions.

This is actually an interoperable solution proposed by ConsenSys in May of this year: first, run this selective node; then, create a trustless, decentralized, secure, trust-free system that can run on the Raspberry Pi.

"V God": The real tricky question is how to implement it

However, the exact design of sharding remains to be seen, as many changes may still occur in the future. Therefore, it seems too early to conceptualize the concept of sharding at a high level, but according to Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, there are actually no basic research problems to be solved at this stage , the really tricky question is how to implement it.

The full implementation of sharding is expected to be in early 2021, but before then, it may also be implemented when the beacon chain goes live in January 2020. If this cadence is followed, it is expected that storage sharding will disappear next summer, and then transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake next fall.

So now Ethereum developers have a lot of work to do on the technical level, and seem to have more work on the social level, such as when the deposit contract is launched, 3 million ETH must be transferred to the beacon chain at the beginning of the Devcon conference superior. After that, people can gradually shift from the proof-of-work chain to the proof-of-stake chain, including smart contracts and dApp projects.

For Ethereum, they don’t have time pressure, which means that developers don’t have to act quickly, and the proof-of-work chain continues to run for a while. However, maybe after the launch of storage sharding, developers may have some social motivation to quickly advance the work, and then full sharding will be able to start.

Whether it is from a project perspective, a technical perspective, or even a longer-term perspective, practitioners in the Ethereum field believe that it will be cooler to run on the proof-of-stake chain.
