Iran near agreement with Oman on managing the Strait

Odaily Planet Daily News: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on August 8 that Iran is currently negotiating with Oman on the legal framework, management methods, and shipping routes for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, and the two sides are very close to reaching an agreement. However, whether the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened depends on other conditions, including the United States making amends for its violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.

Araghchi said that in the past, the Strait of Hormuz had a traffic separation scheme, but Iran believes the original route is no longer suitable for vessel transit, and Tehran cannot accept continued use of that route. Therefore, it is necessary to plan a new navigation mechanism, though this involves complex technical and legal issues. The two sides are currently discussing a temporary transit route. Before the new official transit route is finalized, a temporary lane will first be established, which will serve as the basis for the future official route. On this matter, the military authorities of Iran and Oman have already begun consultations based on existing nautical charts. Once the relevant negotiations are completed and final conclusions are reached, the new transit route will be determined. (Jinshi)
