Odaily Planet Daily News: A employee of a company in Pingshan District, Shenzhen, surnamed Jia, due to debt from online lending, stole the company's core R&D materials and then disguised as an overseas hacker to send extortion emails to the company, demanding 0.88 BTC, 0.8 BTC, and 90,000 USDT as ransom. The company did not pay the ransom and reported the case to the police. Jia was ultimately sentenced by the court to 3 years and 3 months in prison for attempted extortion, along with a fine of 10,000 RMB. During the trial, the procuratorial authority determined that although Bitcoin and Tether are not legal tender, they are virtual assets with property value. The involved virtual currency was valued at over 630,000 RMB, which can serve as the basis for determining the amount of the crime.
