US media reveals inside story of US-Iran ceasefire agreement: Iranian President and Central Bank Governor jointly urge the Supreme Leader to "sign quickly"
Odaily Odaily reported, according to four officials familiar with the meeting details, during the final stages of negotiations, when Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei hesitated to approve the preliminary ceasefire agreement, Iranian President Pezeshkian visited him. The Iranian President told the Supreme Leader that the economic situation was severe, the US maritime blockade was strangling Iran, and if he rejected the agreement, he would resign. Additionally, the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdolnaser Hemmati, also wrote to Khamenei, stating that the country faced a serious budget crisis and that if the maritime blockade continued, critical food and medical supplies would be exhausted by the end of August.
In his letter, Hemmati explained that it was impossible for Iran to sell oil at the required scale and find alternative trade routes. These statements played a key role in Mojtaba's final decision to support the agreement. In a brief public statement, he said that although he "in principle" opposed the agreement, if the President obtained the support of the Supreme National Security Council, he would instruct the President to proceed. Pezeshkian stated that the committee passed the agreement by a vote of 12 in favor out of 13. (Jin Shi)
