Economist: Global bond yields rising, reflecting inflation will remain high for a longer period

2026-05-19 06:41

Odaily Planet Daily News: Anthony Willis, senior economist at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, said in a report that financial conditions have tightened—this is clearly evident in the global bond market, with yields rising sharply. He pointed out that due to rising energy costs, the market expects inflation to remain high for a longer period, and bond yields in many developed markets are trending upward. Willis stated that the European Central Bank is expected to take the lead in raising interest rates at its June meeting, followed by the Bank of England in July. He said: "As for the Federal Reserve, market expectations have shifted dramatically this year, from expectations of aggressive rate cuts under new leadership to the current market pricing, which reflects interest rate hikes over the next 12-18 months."
