Jensen Huang's Latest Key Statement: The chip industry will not see a downturn for some time, and its scale needs to expand five to tenfold
Odaily Odaily reported that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AXIOS co-founder Mike Allen had a broad and in-depth discussion on the current state of artificial intelligence. Huang stated that although the chip industry has long experienced cycles of boom and bust, "this time is different." Even considering the historically extremely cyclical fluctuations of the chip industry (as shown in the chart), the current boom still has room to continue developing.
When asked whether the industry is about to face a downturn, Huang replied: "No, it won't happen for a while yet. This time is different because it's not driven by demand." Huang further explained that the current AI boom is not propelled by consumer demand, which has long been the industry's main driver. The current AI boom is industry-driven, meaning that the core technology of computers is undergoing a change. We need to build an entirely new infrastructure layer on a global scale. We already have energy, the internet, roads, and railways; now, we need to construct the intelligent layer of AI, adding another layer of infrastructure on top of these foundations. And this layer of infrastructure relies on chips. I believe our semiconductor industry may need to be five to ten times larger than it is now... The current industry scale is too small. Everything is in extreme shortage, not because it's a cyclical issue or due to consumer demand, but because of fundamental, infrastructure-related factors. Therefore, the entire industry is in a state of shortage. I think we must expand the scale of this industry several times over. (Jinshi)
