Meta plans to mass-produce self-developed AI chip Iris in September to support next-year computing power increase to 14 gigawatts

2026-07-09 12:54

Odaily Planet Daily reports that Meta plans to start mass production in September of its self-developed AI chip, codenamed Iris, to support the company's goal of increasing its total computing power to 14 gigawatts (GW) by 2027. The chip is part of Meta's self-developed MTIA fourth-generation AI chip plan, with Broadcom involved in the design and TSMC responsible for manufacturing, aiming to reduce AI computing costs and decrease dependence on Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Internal memos show that the Iris chip has completed a 6-week testing phase without any major issues being discovered. Meta expects its AI infrastructure spending this year to reach up to $145 billion and has signed long-term supply agreements with Samsung Electronics, Sandisk, and Sumitomo Electric Industries to support data center expansion.
