Sam Altman criticized Anthropic for using "fear-based marketing" to promote Claude Mythos, sparking controversy over AI safety

2026-04-23 12:18

Odaily reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that rival Anthropic has adopted a "fear-based marketing strategy" in promoting its new model, Claude Mythos, and related safety risk warnings may be exaggerated.

Sam Altman pointed out that emphasizing the potential dangers of AI could lend legitimacy to "allowing a few institutions to control AI." While some safety concerns are valid, exaggerating risks is itself an effective marketing tactic.

Previously, Claude Mythos drew widespread attention for its ability to automatically discover software vulnerabilities and execute complex cyberattack simulations. Anthropic is currently granting limited testing access to a few institutions, including Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft, through a restricted program.

Overall, this incident highlights the intensifying divide within the AI industry between the "safety-first" and "open development" approaches. (Decrypt)
