Hong Kong Police "Operation Strategic Strike" Arrests 682, Busts HK$44 Million Virtual Currency Money Laundering Gang

A total of 682 individuals were arrested on charges including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining property by deception, and money laundering. The operation is linked to 580 fraud and technology crime cases involving funds totaling up to HK$620 million. Under a separate operation codenamed "Operation War Net" led by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, a local online romance scam syndicate and a money laundering gang utilizing virtual currencies were dismantled. This gang defrauded 314 victims of approximately HK$44 million over the past 16 months, with an average loss of about HK$150,000 per case. (HK01)
