Is 2023 the Year of ZK?
Cheap, fast, and secure, ZK-rollups are an important part of Ethereum’s scaling plans, and we wanted to see which ZK projects will shine in 2023.
So far we have seen:
Scroll - enables smart contracts;
Polygon Hermez - deployed its public testnet;
Zksync - aiming to launch EVM-compatible L3 in Q1 2023;

Polygon ZK (formerly Hermez)
In 2021, Hermez was acquired by Polygon and renamed Polygon Hermez (now Polygon ZK).
Therefore, Polygon tokens $MATIC and $HEZ are integrated and can be freely exchanged on the Hermez website.

Scroll ZKP
On January 9, 2023, the Scroll team performed a scheduled Pre-Alpha reset to introduce some new and exciting performance optimizations that will help drive high throughput on the Pre-Alpha testnet.

zkSync
zksync is a second-layer scaling solution that provides cheaper and faster transactions than the main Ethereum blockchain (first-layer).
It uses ZK-Rollup technology to process transactions outside the Ethereum blockchain while maintaining its security and finality. The benefits of zkSync include low gas fees, high speed, and a high level of security.

Polygon's breakthrough in zkEVM development
Polygon's zkEVM solution aims to significantly improve the experience of using and building on Ethereum by providing scalability and lower transaction costs, which is an exciting step towards greater adoption of Web3 technologies.
The system also enables dApps that exist on Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible chains to easily migrate to zkEVM, where the equivalence of the EVM and Ethereum network effects provide developers with clear advantages.
Polygon's zkEVM was developed using programming languages, such as Solidity, and toolsets that developers are already familiar with, such as Metamask, Hardhat, Truffle, and Remix. This means developers can migrate dApps by simply switching nodes.

Summarize
The investment and development of zero-knowledge proofs is an important signal that the technology is poised to enter prime time.
zero-knowledge proofAdvantages include:
For contributions to the scalability of the Ethereum network,
Compared with traditional rollups, it has higher security and privacy,
Possess the ability to create complex smart contracts and dApps, which is not possible on Ethereum L1.
Disadvantages include:
With so many ZK-Rollup projects popping up, it can be difficult to separate the good ones from the ones that might make false promises.
While Rollup technology offers new benefits, it also introduces some new difficulties in controlling data accessibility in a decentralized and censorship-resistant manner. On the path to widespread adoption, decentralization and security must come first.
