Bitcoin mining computing power cycle is compared to AI infrastructure demand

2026-07-19 10:45

Odaily Planet Daily News Clem Chambers stated that China's LLMs catching up with OpenAI and Anthropic does not mean the end of the AI boom; LLMs are just one part of the AI industry. He believes that free or open-source models will not weaken AI demand, as enterprises and governments still require higher levels of AI capability. He compared the demand for AI infrastructure to Bitcoin mining, saying both revolve around computing power per kilowatt and cost per kilowatt-hour. Hardware, energy, cooling, and turbines cannot be provided for free, and the related value chain is constrained by resources and upgrade cycles. Chambers pointed out that AI demand drives continuous iteration of hardware and software, and equipment may face a replacement cycle similar to crypto mining. He believes that the cost base of AI comes not only from the models themselves but also from computing power allocation and infrastructure investment. (Forbes)
