US media says Iran studies "The Art of the Deal" to crack Trump's negotiation strategy

2026-06-24 07:24

Odaily Planet Daily News According to the Wall Street Journal on the 23rd local time, Iranian diplomats said that because Trump's behavior style is unique, they have been studying "The Art of the Deal," co-authored by Trump and journalist Tony Schwartz in 1987. The book advises negotiators to make extreme and unpredictable demands to create anxiety and force the opponent to make concessions.

Iranian negotiators have told intermediaries that they consulted a team of psychologists to help understand Trump's way of thinking, attempting to predict Trump's public reaction to Iran's proposals. Political analysts and mediators said Trump's high-profile and tough statements have not yet elicited additional concessions from the Iranian side.

Mohamed Amersi, an Iran expert at the Wilson Center, a Washington-based think tank, said: "Trump is using the strategy from 'The Art of the Deal,' testing the other side's resolve with extreme threats. But the Iranians are very clear about his strategy." A person familiar with the situation of Iran's diplomatic negotiations in Switzerland said that there are no psychologists on the Iranian negotiating team, and the Iranian side prefers to avoid psychologizing Trump's motives or decisions.
