U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding Requires Immediate Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran Could Receive Sanctions Relief

2026-06-12 03:37

Odaily Odaily News: Trump stated that the upcoming U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding requires the Strait of Hormuz to immediately resume navigation without charging tolls, and to gradually grant sanctions relief on the condition that Iran fulfills its commitments. The agreement proposes to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, covering Lebanon, and to advance nuclear negotiations during this period.

Reports indicate that the U.S. and Iran have reached an agreement on the text of the memorandum but still require final approval. The memorandum includes a framework for addressing Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, with Iran pledging not to seek nuclear weapons. The specific nuclear arrangements still need to be implemented through a more detailed subsequent agreement.

Additionally, the agreement requires the Strait of Hormuz to return to pre-war shipping levels within 30 days. In exchange, the U.S. will lift relevant blockade measures and allow Iran to resume oil exports within a certain period. If Iran continues to fulfill its commitments and demonstrates "sincerity" in subsequent negotiations, the scope of sanctions relief will be further expanded. (Axios)
