US media: Trump Tightens Terms of Iran Agreement, Amendments Submitted to Tehran

2026-05-31 00:33

According to a report by Odaily, citing the New York Times, three officials revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump has tightened the terms of a potential framework agreement aimed at ending the war with Iran, and has sent these amendments back to Tehran for consideration. It remains unclear what specific changes Trump has made to the text of the agreement.

Two officials stated that Trump is concerned about parts of the potential agreement that involve unfreezing Iranian funds. He has long been critical of former President Barack Obama for taking a similar approach in an agreement signed over a decade ago to curb Iran's nuclear program. One official noted that Trump is also frustrated with Iran's slow response to U.S. proposals. These proposals were repeatedly negotiated with the involvement of intermediaries, including Pakistan.

The official added that Trump's proposed amendments—a harsher new proposal—may be aimed at pressuring Iran to speed up the process and urge its acceptance of a framework agreement that has already been sent to its supreme leader, Mujtaba Khamenei, for approval. (Jin Shi)
