US media: Musk's Grok is losing ground in the AI race

2026-05-12 03:29

According to Odaily Planet Daily, Musk's artificial intelligence model Grok is falling far behind its rapidly growing competitors. Meanwhile, a large-scale computing power lease agreement between his company SpaceX and Anthropic has raised questions from outsiders: Does Grok still have a chance to catch up with industry leaders?

Since its launch two years ago, Grok has attracted millions of users through its integration with Musk's social platform X and controversial features such as "AI companions." However, the latest data shows its growth momentum seems to have stalled. Data from analytics firm AppMagic shows that Grok's downloads in April this year dropped to approximately 8.3 million, compared to over 20 million in January this year.

A survey conducted by research firm Recon Analytics, covering over 260,000 AI users and professionals in the United States, shows that in the second quarter of 2026, the proportion of respondents willing to pay for Grok remained virtually unchanged at 0.174%, compared to 0.173% a year ago. In contrast, over 6% of respondents said they have paid for ChatGPT. (Jin Shi)
