U.S. Government Shutdown May Last Longer Than Expected, Funding Bill Unlikely to Pass via Fast-Track Procedure

2026-02-01 08:16

Odaily News: U.S. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that they will not assist Republicans in passing the federal government funding bill through a fast-track procedure. U.S. media pointed out that Jeffries' remarks indicate that the U.S. government shutdown may last longer than expected. The U.S. Senate passed the remaining fiscal year funding bill for multiple federal departments on January 30, which will now be sent to the House for consideration. However, the House is currently in recess and may vote on the funding bill as early as February 2. It is reported that funding for the operation of several federal departments, including the U.S. State Department and the Pentagon, was exhausted on January 30, leading to a partial "shutdown" of the U.S. federal government starting at midnight on January 31.
