Trump Tariffs Face Judgment, US Treasury Secretary Bessent Anticipates "Final Ruling"

2026-01-09 14:40

Odaily News: The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to reconvene this Friday (January 9th) and may issue a ruling on the legality of the global tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. This high-profile lawsuit is not only a significant test of presidential power but will also have profound implications for the global economy. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke at the Minnesota Economic Club on Thursday, strongly defending the current tariff policy. Bessent stated that Trump's "strategic use" of tariffs has successfully encouraged both domestic and foreign companies to increase direct investment in the U.S., hire workers, and build factories. Facing the risk that the Supreme Court might overturn the current tariffs, Bessent revealed that the government has prepared alternative plans. Even if the court rules that Trump abused the IEEPA, the government could still impose tariffs based on Section 301 and Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, as well as Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
