The first focus of Paradigm, what exactly is "intent-centric"?

What are some representative projects?

On the evening of July 25th, top crypto venture capital firm Paradigm published an article on its official website titled "Collaborate with Paradigm".

In the article, Paradigm introduced the ten potential trends that the organization is currently focusing on in the crypto field, with the first one being "intent-centric protocols and infrastructure".

Regarding intent-centric, some readers may still be unfamiliar with this concept, but in fact, it has sparked widespread discussion at the EthCC and related events in the past week, with some even calling it the future of Web 3.

At the ETHGlobal Paris hackathon, which concluded on July 23rd, a project named Bob the Solver made it to the final round with its concrete development of intent-centric, giving us a glimpse into what intent-centric really means.

The idea behind Bob the Solver stems from the emerging paradigm shift in the domain of account abstraction, with its core focus on not just the precise "transaction" process, but rather the user's ultimate "intent".

In the narrative logic of this project, the "intent" represents the desired outcome for the user, while the "transaction" encompasses the precise steps required to achieve that outcome. For example, a user planning to purchase an NFT on the Polygon network, that is their "intent", which is simple and easy to understand. However, the corresponding "transaction" may involve coin swapping, cross-chain operations, and other complex and time-consuming on-chain operations, requiring a certain level of blockchain-related knowledge.

In the eyes of Bob the Solver, users usually only have "intention" needs, not precise details about "transactions", so this project can accept user "intentions" and automatically generate appropriate transactions on their behalf. Ultimately, Bob the Solver hopes to simplify the entire process of interaction on the blockchain, allowing more users who are unfamiliar with blockchain to participate in the wave of Web 3.

Similarly, Anoma, which has just completed a $25 million financing, also frequently talks about intent-centric at EthCC. The project's two co-founders, Arian Brink and Christopher Goes, have both given presentations on the development of intent-centric.

Odaily Note: Christopher Goes' speech on intent-centric rollups.

Like Bob the Solver, Arian Brink stated in his presentation that Anoma supports an architecture specification centered around "intent", where users need to initiate "intent" rather than "transactions". Specifically, users only need to specify the desired state changes they want to achieve, without worrying about the specifics of execution.

In Anoma's view, "intent" can be customized and its content can be complex, which enables better expression of user needs, and ultimately opens up new possibilities for applications.

In addition to Bob the Solver and Anoma, there are also other projects currently under development that revolve around intent-centric, such as Essential, which was just unveiled on July 18th.

Essential's main focus is on eliminating certain exploitative behaviors (such as MEV) in the "transaction" process and delivering the most ideal "intent" results to users.

In Essential's view, when a user initiates a "transaction", each participant in the transaction chain acts according to their own interests and profits from it, thereby reducing the ultimate value received by the user.

Therefore, Essential aims to build an intent-based blockchain system and introduce a role called Solver, which is responsible for collecting users' intent requirements in batches and finding the best solution to maximize the return of results that align with the user's intent.

In summary, there are already many projects being developed around the concept of intent-centric. Although each project has different visions (e.g. Bob the Solver aims to attract more users, Anoma aims to help users achieve better expression of their demands, while Essential focuses on mitigating exploitative behaviors), they all take the same path of replacing "transactions" with "intent" to completely change the interaction paradigm of the current on-chain ecosystem.

With Paradigm's call to action, and thanks to their influence within the industry, it is inevitable that there will be more intent-centric projects emerging in the future. Perhaps this will also be a seed that propels Crypto towards the next peak.
