ZK Rollup is undoubtedly one of the hottest tracks this year. As a high-profile new technology, its implementation is not easy, but its importance to the encryption world is beyond doubt.

The Sovereign team proposed a new idea for rollup expansion. The team tried to provide each developer with the ability to build and deploy rollups through an SDK. This common SDK allows rollups to be easily deployed on each Layer 1, and Different rollups are interoperable.

Optimistic Rollup breaks composability

Optimistic Rollup attempts to solve this problem by allowing developers to extend existing blockchains with new logic, rather than launching new blockchains. This greatly reduces the barriers to entry for application chain development.

But Optimistic Rollup (which is also the current market leader) is not a panacea. To minimize the burden on shared validators, Optimistic Rollup relies on fraud proofs to prevent misconduct. During an attack, these fraud proofs may be scrutinized - thus Optimistic Rollup has a long "final delay" during which transactions may be rolled back due to fraud proofs appearing. This makes the transition from Optimistic Rollup slow and expensive.

Zk Rollup is the future

For all these reasons, we expect Zk Rollup to be the dominant scalability paradigm. It has the benefits of Optimistic Rollup, but without the long final delay. Instead of waiting days to see if a proof of fraud appears, users can be confident that their transaction is final as long as a proof of validity is created, which only takes a few seconds.

What is the Sovereign SDK?

The Sovereign SDK aims to implement zk Rollups like the Cosmos SDK did for Layer 1.

The Sovereign SDK will provide all the examples of the blockchain—a P2P network, a database, and an RPC node—letting the builder focus on the business logic of the chain. Additionally, it will provide a set of default modules that operate efficiently in a zero-knowledge environment: a token implementation, a verified data store, and a bridge module. Developers will be able to combine these primitives into AppChains, or build their own state transition functions entirely from scratch through a standard set of APIs.

What features will the Sovereign SDK provide?

Sovereign SDK Rollups enable seamless interoperability, using a new bridging technology based on proof aggregation. Allows Sovereign SDK Rollups on shared L1 to be bridged without a trusted third party. Since zk proofs can be aggregated, rollups will always be able to maintain the required bridges with minimal cost. An off-chain relay layer can aggregate the proofs of all peer rollups into a single proof, and only that single proof can be verified on-chain. And, since state transitions are proven to work, there is no need to pay liquidity providers or wait a week for transactions to complete. Bridging is done in no time, with no downsides.

Sovereign SDK Rollup will be safe and scalable. With every component built specifically for zk Rollup, the Sovereign SDK provides great performance by default. Thanks to advances in parallelism, proofs can be completed in seconds. With the magic of zero-knowledge proofs, chains will be able to scale without sacrificing end-user verifiability.

Where is the project?

We are currently working hard to develop the Sovereign SDK, and the roadmap is divided into three phases.

Phase 1: Research (Ongoing)

The Sovereign SDK is currently under development. We are designing the default storage module, token economics and core API. (If you're interested in solving these problems, check out our job board!). A prototype is under study. While the SDK will support a wide range of data availability layers and proof systems, our current prototype integrates Celestia for data availability and Risc 0 for proof. This phase is expected to be completed around the second quarter of 2023.

Phase 2: Initial Implementation

The initial implementation of the Sovereign SDK will begin concurrently with the remaining research. During this time, we will implement the peer-to-peer network, RPC nodes, core API, and default storage and ordering modules.

Phase 3: Optimization

Sovereign Labs wants to see blockchains supporting billions of users. This will only happen if developers without PhDs in cryptography can use zero-knowledge techniques, and developers who are not protocol experts can build Rollups.

But infinite scalability is worthless if it comes at the expense of end-user verifiability. If building, running, or viewing the state of a blockchain requires the cooperation of some centralized entity, then we have failed. That's why the Sovereign SDK has always been completely free and open source, and why we've worked hard to design every component of the stack for maximum scalability.
