Odaily News On May 13, three Illinois users filed a class action lawsuit in federal court, accusing Coinbase of violating the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). The lawsuit states that Coinbase collected facial geometry data during the identity verification process without the user's written consent, and did not disclose the data storage period and the details of sharing it with third-party verification service providers such as Jumio. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation of $5,000 for each intentional violation and $1,000 for negligent violations.
It is worth noting that this is the second time Coinbase has faced a similar lawsuit. In 2023, a similar case finally entered the arbitration process, and the parties to this lawsuit claimed that more than 10,000 related arbitration requests had been rejected because the exchange refused to pay the fees. This lawsuit comes at a sensitive time when Coinbase is facing at least six lawsuits due to customer service data leaks. (Cointelegraph)
