U.S. House Speaker: The House will still give the green light to Trump's global tariff plan
2025-04-08 00:03:28

Odaily News U.S. House Speaker Johnson said on Monday the House would give Trump "room" to implement his massive global tariff regime, even as some Republican lawmakers publicly pleaded with him to negotiate a way to remove the tariffs before they take effect on Wednesday.
"We'll give him the space he needs to implement his policies and then see how it goes," Johnson said. The speaker went on to say that Trump is "actively engaged and trying to address" the trade deficit. Republican opposition has taken the form of bipartisan legislation that seeks to wrest Congress's power over tariffs from the president.
Earlier, Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell and Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa introduced legislation to limit the president's unilateral power to impose tariffs. U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) plans to introduce the House version of the legislation on Monday. Johnson refused to publicly commit on Monday to submit the revised Senate budget plan to the House for a vote this week due to strong opposition from a group of fiscal conservatives. However, some senior Republican aides said that the current plan is still to hold a final vote on Wednesday afternoon as originally planned. (Politico)
