New York Times: US to release BTC-e operator Alexander Vinnik

Odaily News As part of a swap with Russia, the United States will release suspected Russian cybercrime ringleader Alexander Vinnik in exchange for the release of U.S. citizen Marc Fogel, The New York Times revealed on Wednesday. Vinnik previously operated BTC-e, once one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges. He was arrested in 2017 and detained at Washington's request on suspicion of laundering $4 billion through the platform. In May, he pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy charges and faces 20 years in prison. (Reuters)
