Odaily News Andre Cronje, founder of Sonic Labs, recently published an article on X criticizing the Ethereum L2 solution’s handling of profits and potential inconsistency with Ethereum’s decentralization principles. “I don’t understand how Ethereum users convince themselves. L2 is the reason for Ethereum’s inflation again.”
At the center of the dispute are two competing visions for scaling Ethereum, with critics arguing that L2 generates significant revenue but returns only a small fraction of data availability and security to Ethereum.
Supporters of decentralized scaling, including Cronje, have advocated for using solutions like Sonic directly to enhance Ethereum’s base layer to reduce reliance on external L2 providers.
Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, noted that Ethereum’s supply has now exceeded pre-merger levels (September 2022), confirming that the network has resumed inflation. In order to address the inefficiencies of Ethereum’s L2 solution, Cronje proposed using Sonic’s technology to bypass the limitations of the centralized model.
According to previous news, members of the Sonic Labs team publicly questioned the flow of Base sorter revenue, implying that the Base team was dumping ETH, which was refuted by members of the Base team.
