Odaily News Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy Corporation, the owner of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, to repair the Three Mile Island No. 1 reactor to set up the "Crane Clean Energy Center", which is part of the tech giant's commitment to power its artificial intelligence business with carbon-free energy. As part of the agreement, Constellation Energy will provide Microsoft with 835 megawatts of electricity and spend about $1.6 billion to bring the facility online, with plans to achieve this goal in 2028. The deal still must be approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), state officials and local authorities before resuming operations. It is reported that the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant is located near the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, USA. On March 28, 1979, a core meltdown accident occurred. In the 7-level system of the International Nuclear Event Scale, this accident was rated as Level 5. The Three Mile Island nuclear leak is the most serious nuclear accident in the United States to date, but compared with the subsequent Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the Three Mile Island nuclear leak is still within controllable range.
